Ode to Lane Memorial Blood Bank
Some of the things I've done at LMBB...
- Called donors and asked them to donate
- Registered donors as they entered the blood center
- Printed Calling Lists, and entered calling information into Alpha-Micro
- Prepared gifts for volunteers and multiple time donors
- Registered donors on bloodmobiles
- Ate nearly all the donor refreshments at the Bethesda Lutheran BMB
- Ate lunch in the Sony cafeteria ;)
- Entered every donation and credit every night in a computer system older than me for 6 mos.
- Got to know Keith, the janitor and Dan the on-call relief courier
- Logged billing information for unnamed newborns, and cancer patients whose names often appeared in Register Guard obituaries
- Donated Blood
- Been deferred
- Wrote thank you cards to new donors
- Been involved in a car accident while on the BMB
- Prepared letters to inform donors they could never donate again
- Prepared letters to inform donors they had an incurable disease
- Reported blood product deviations to the FDA
- Confirmed every relevant deferral from Alpha Micro transferred to BBCS
- Scheduled bloodmobile visits
- Prepared Bloodmobile trip sheets
- Wrote thank you letters to bloodmobile coordinators
- Reported crummy bloodmobile collections at customer service meetings
- Processed and delivered tubes to take to the airport
- Moved into the blood bank for 18 months
- Learned to turn off the fire alarm
- Woke up to the security alarm...3 times
- Set off the security alarm...2 times
- Unintentionally learned RFI's 1-800 number by heart
- Initiated the creation of the 3rd on-call courier position
- Learned to hula with platelets
- Delivered Blood to the Register Guard at midnight
- Delivered Blood to the State Police for a gunshot wound victim in Florence
- Delivered irradiated blood to McKenzie Willamette Hospital in the middle of the
night - Picked up blood for OML at 3am from the downtown Greyhound station....3 nights in a row
- Took samples from APH units to monitor for bacterial contamination
- Took samples from APH units for platelet counts
- Caused APH units to be discarded
- Caused an RBC and platelet to be discarded
- Been threatened by a father whose daughter passed out in the shower after donating
- Informed Blood Bank of Hawaii we "can't spare 50 random platelet units"
- Been called by PSBC at 4am on a Sunday to inform me that BBCS will be offline for a half hour, and to ask that I "let everyone know"
- Ate more than my fair share of cookies
- Changed titles 6 times
- Learned why I'm proud to be a part of Lane Memorial Blood Bank Learned how important
- Lane Memorial Blood Bank is to the Lane County Community
